Collaborations
At Maata, we believe in the power of creativity and community and want to do our part to cultivate both so we are excited to engage in ongoing collaborations with other female owned brands who are making magic in their respective fields. Supporting, uplifting and celebrating independent and local female artists, business owners and creators is important to us and we hope you enjoy these collaborations as much as we do.
Our first collaboration is with Canadian artist Whitney Lewis-Smith, who worked with us to create our eco-friendly and sustainable packaging.
Her work uses a combination of historic and modern photographic processes as a means to speak on contemporary topics, most recently discussing consumerism, commodity accessibility, and globalization’s impact on the environment.
For Maata, Whitney used old photographic techniques to print flora onto vintage linen fabric and linen napkins. These one of a kind pieces of art are used to wrap the product using the Japanese technique of Furoshiki. Our customers can up-cycle these gorgeous prints into napkins, framed art, cushions, or whatever you can imagine.
For our second collaboration, we are working with Grace Wittig of Silk and Sumac who is a dyer, maker and naturalist. Grace uses leaves, seeds and flowers that are placed on mordanted natural cloth such as cotton, linen, silk and wool which are then steamed. During the steaming process, pigments are extracted from the plant material which produce a one-of-a-kind print.
